7 October 2006: Traditional Folk Village in Suwon

We stayed with Liet in our Korean trip, and he was kind enough to take us to the Traditional Folk Village located in the heart of Suwon. The Village showcases the best of Korea's ancient culture and traditional arts in an old rural setting, so it is very kampong. There are country huts of the peasants and clan buildings for ceremonial functions, and replicas of farming tools, ceramics, pottery and stoneware can be found in these structures.

We visited this shooting spot for the popular Korean drama serial Dae Jang Keum(大长今):

There was a crowd assembled at a nearby square, and we knew that some performances were coming right up. We squeezed our way for good viewing positions in the crowd and had enjoyed the shows very much.

This was a reenactment of old celebrations of a bountiful harvest and ceremonies to pray for better ones in the seasons ahead:

This reminds me of the scenes of trapeze artists on tightropes that I had seen in the Korean film King and the Clown:

This was a performance by horsemen who had displayed remarkable skills in their seemingly impossible feats. One of them was a female rider, and together they did gymnastic acts on galloping horses, displayed great archery shooting bull's eyes while riding horses, and wielded long swords in vigour on horseback. All these stunts were stunningly amazing!

In the evening, we went to Gangnam for a buffet dinner in Seoul Garden style. Yummy!
