3 September 2006: Books, Heights and Rain

Francoise, Hisashi and I went to the Taipei City Hall vicinity, with the frail hope of spotting the charismatic Chairman-Mayor Ma Ying-jeou. Although I had seen him before (and shaken his hands once), I would still appreciate it if I can see him again. Obviously we failed to, and ended up in Taiwan's biggest bookshop--the Eslite(诚品) flagship store.

The bookstore is a building of about six stories high (I think). It houses a sizeable collection of books, ranging from serious academic references to entertainment guides in Chinese, English and Japanese. Apart from books, the store sells a variety of products such as apparel, cds, and souvenirs. It is certainly much larger in scale than both Borders and Kinokuniya combined.

Light drizzle came, and we walked to Taipei 101 in the rain. We all know that Taipei 101 is the tallest building in the world, but few might have realized that it has the world's fastest lift (made by Toshiba) to its reputation as well. We were taken to the observatory located on the 89th storey of the tower, and gained a paranomic night view of Taipei's skyline. Indeed, the experience was worthy of the NTD 320 that we had paid for each admission. We were surprised to see Bingxun and Lulan(our Korean friend) at the tower right before we left the observatory, and Rainie Yang's hit Ambiguous rang in my ears there and then.

We had a memorable night. Sweet dreams to everybody, wherever you are now!
